The Dyad : 대안으로서의 둘
Stay in the middle, walk in this 미로. 1)
하나는 온전하며, 둘을 거쳐 셋의 완전함에 이른다. 하나와 셋을 매개하고 중재하는 둘은 그 속성상 대립과 분열을 의미하지만, 대립과 현상의 부정을 걸쳐 통합으로 나아가기에, 둘은 결국 창조 혹은 생성을 의미한다. 내가 아닌 그 어떠한 것이 존재하는 이상, 우리는 관계 속에서 무수한 분열과 통일을 반복하며 살아가게 되는 것이다.
기원전 5세기의 그리스 철학자들은 ‘둘’ 또는 ‘다른 것’의 원리를 ‘디아드(Dyad)’라 불렀다. 그들은 2가 신성한 ‘모나드(Monad)’로부터 스스로 떨어져 나가 통일성에 반란을 일으키고, 하나에서 출발한 최초의 숫자이자 최초의 선(善)에서의 일탈이라는 죄를 상징한다고 믿었다.
그렇기에 인도유럽어에서 ‘둘‘을 뜻하는 어근이 ‘불량‘이라는 의미를 내포하고 있다는 점은 꽤 의미심장하다. 그리스 접두사 dys(예: dyspepsia, 소화불량)와 라틴어 dis(예: dishonorable, 불명예스러운)는 모두 ‘duo'(둘)에서 파생되었다.2)더 나아가 dubious(수상한)’, ‘doubt(의심)’와 Zweifel(의혹)’과 같은 단어를 살펴볼 때, ‘불량’에서 더 나아가 무언가의 존재를 부정 혹은 믿지 못하는 상태, 즉 의심하는 감정까지 내포한다고 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면 의심한다는 것은 마음이 둘로 갈라졌다는 것이기 때문이다.
이렇듯 디아드의 기본 원리는 양극성(polarity)이다. 양극 사이의 긴장은 서로 반대되는 관계, 대조, 차이의 형태로 모든 자연사와 인간사에서 일어난다. 디아드가 통일성으로부터 분리해 나가는 것처럼 보이지만, 서로 반대되는 극들이 자신의 근본을 기억하고, 서로 결합해 원래의 통일 상태로 돌아가려고 서로를 끌어당긴다는 것이 디아드의 역설이며, 이러한 역설이 모든 창조 과정의 기초를 이룬다.3) 분열과 양극의 궁극적인 통합은 ‘하나’로의 회귀, 혹은 정신의 변증법적인 운동을 통해 ‘셋‘으로 나아갈 때 비로소 가능하지만, 이러한 양극 사이의 긴장에서 분화와 발전의 역사가 시작되고 통합의 가능성을 내포한다는 점에서 봤을 때, 둘의 성격은 꽤 희망적이다.
마지막으로, 디아드의 다른 성질로 ‘대담함’이 있다. 원래의 전체성으로부터 대담하게 분리해 나옴과 동시에, 우리는 불안전하지만, 주체성과 방향성을 획득하게 된다. 이 양극성과 긴장 속에서 우리는 매 순간 창의적인 선택을 강요받지만, 이러한 불편함이 곧 올바른 방향으로 나아가고 있다는 증거인 것이다. 즉, 나아가는 삶은 불안정함과 함께 주체성과 방향성을 획득하는 과정이다.

The Dyad : From Dot to Line
Stay in the middle, walk in this 미로(maze).1)
One is whole, and through Two, reaches the completeness of Three. The two, which mediates and arbitrates between one and three, inherently signifies opposition and division. However, because they progress towards wholeness by opposition and the denial of phenomena, they ultimately denote creation. So long as the Other exists, we inevitably live through countless cycles of division and unity within relations.
In the 5th century BCE, Greek philosophers referred to the principle of Two or Otherness as the Dyad. They believed that the Two rebels against unity, diverging from the sacred Monad, as well as symbolizing an irreverent departure from the original unity and the primeval good.
One can also note that the Indo-European root for ‘two’ implies a sense of “badness”. Both the Greek prefix dys- (as in dyspepsia) and Latin dis- (as in dishonorable) derive from ‘duo’.2) Furthermore, in words like ‘dubious’ and ‘doubt’, as in the German Zweifel, reveals a sense of existential denial or disbelief, as doubt can possibly signify a division of the mind.
The basic principle of the Dyad is polarity. The tension between two poles are manifested as oppositions, contrasts, and differences across all natural and human affairs. While the Dyad appears to contradict unity, the paradox lies in the fact that the opposing poles remember their origin, and together as one, pull each other back to the origin, eventually forming the basis of all creative processes.3)
The ultimate integration of division and polarity takes a leap towards the Three, or returns to the One. Considering that the tension brings out a differentiation and development of history, the Two potentially implies hopefulness and creation.
Finally, the Dyad has a quality of ‘Boldness’. While we are relentlessly separated from the original wholeness, we gain agency and guidance in a state of turbulence. In such an experience of polarity and tension, we are forced to make creative choices at every moment, and this discomfort reveals to be a positive affirmation that we are on the right path. In other words, moving forward is a process of gaining agency and direction amidst all the instability.
